 Kirkwood Director Wins State Star Award

Alan D. Beach, Regional Director of the Kirkwood Small Business Development Center in Marion, was chosen by his peers as the 2009 Iowa State Star. A special awards reception honoring all Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC) 2009 State Stars was held on September 17, 2009 in Orlando, Florida in conjunction with the national ASBDC conference. The reception was sponsored by Corporate Turnaround, an alliance partner of the ASBDC that has helped develop training guides and videos for SBDCs nationwide.

 About the Kirkwood SBDC

The Kirkwood Small Business Development Center had its beginnings as a branch of the University of Iowa Business Development Center in 1989. In 1992, the Kirkwood Small Business development Center became a full-fledged sub-center located at the New Business Center incubator.

The cooperative organization was designed to stimulate economic development and create jobs in eastern Iowa counties by locating, encouraging, educating, developing, and supporting potential entrepreneurs. The facility provides small business training, counseling, financial advice, and small business classes.

Volunteers Unsung Heroes in Disaster Recovery

Because of the hard-working volunteers, a Des Moines man will be able to spend Thanksgiving in his newly refurbished home, instead of just the small part that was livable after the floods of 2008. Iowa was ranked fifth in the nation for volunteering according to a recent study done. There were 865,000 volunteers, which represents 37 percent of all Iowa residents.

Governor Culver Announces New Disaster Assistance Programs

Governor Chet Culver today announced four new disaster assistance programs for small businesses and landlords impacted by the 2008 storms and floods, as well as improvements to the duplication of benefits policy for homeowners, at a press conference in Cedar Rapids.

Small Businesses Won Record $96.8 Billion in Federal Contracts in 2009

Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 saw an increase of more than $3 billion in federal contracts awarded to small businesses from FY 2008. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s fourth annual small business procurement scorecard, the $96.8 billion represents 21.89 percent of all federal spending.
