Sue Pitts, regional director of the Iowa Western Community College Small Business Development Center in Council Bluffs, was named the 2011 Iowa “State Star” by the national Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC).
The ASBDC annually recognizes Small Business Development Center personnel for demonstrating exemplary work performance, significantly contributing to the organization’s economic development efforts, and showing a strong commitment to small businesses.
Pitts, who’s been with the organization since March 2004, was nominated by her associates for the honor. She will be honored at a special reception held during the ASBDC national annual fall conference in San Diego, CA on Sept. 6th.

“Sue’s peers have recognized her hard work and dedication to the businesses in the seven counties served by the Iowa Western Community College Small Business Development Center,” says Iowa SBDC State Director Jim Heckmann, “as well as for her innovation and expertise in the social media and online marketing arena. She very much deserves this national recognition.”
Mark Stanley, Executive Director of Economic and Workforce Development at Iowa Western Community College, Council Bluffs, adds, “Sue is fully invested in the success of her clients, she is passionate about entrepreneurship, and she is a talented consultant. By combining these attributes, she provides a lot of value to her clients in southwest Iowa.”
Past recipients of the award include the former state director, former associate state director, former regional directors from Mason City and Waterloo, and current regional directors from Fort Dodge, Urbandale, Iowa City, Spencer, Dubuque and Cedar Rapids.
Iowa’s Small Business Development Centers are an outreach program of Iowa State University's College of Business. Partially funded by the U. S. Small Business Administration, the organization has 16 regional assistance centers located strategically across the state. Since program inception in 1981, the Centers have helped hundreds of thousands of Iowa businesses and entrepreneurs through individual, professional counseling and affordable training.
